What is Commander (EDH) in Magic: The Gathering?

Commander, also known as EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander), is one of the most beloved formats in Magic: The Gathering. It’s a singleton format, meaning you can only include one copy of each card (besides basic lands), and it’s typically played in multiplayer games with 3–5 players.

How It Works

  • You choose one legendary creature to be your Commander.
  • Your deck must have exactly 100 cards, including the Commander.
  • All cards must match your Commander’s color identity.
  • You can’t include more than one copy of any card (except basic lands).

Why People Love Commander

Commander is about big plays, unique decks, and personal expression. It’s less about competitive efficiency and more about synergy, flavor, and fun. With thousands of cards available, no two decks are ever the same.

How SetBrewer Helps

SetBrewer was built for Commander players who have lots of cards from booster boxes or set bundles and want to put them to use.

  • Track which MTG sets you own.
  • Build Commander decks using only those sets.
  • Find similar cards if you don’t own a perfect match.
  • Compare decklists to your collection — paste in lists from Archidekt, Moxfield, or anywhere else.

If you’re looking to explore Commander for the first time — or make better use of the sets you’ve already bought — SetBrewer is a great way to start.
